The Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust - Our Goals

Preservation

The Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust was formed in 1991 to preserve our town's cultural history and architectural heritage. We work with local officials, property owners, and other organizations to insure that historically significant buildings and sites are preserved for the future.

Restoration

Our group owns four historically important structures that are being restored to bring the history of Wallingford to life. These buildings span the first two centuries of our town's history, allowing us to offer a unique perspective of life in New England prior to the twentieth century.

Education

Historic preservation and restoration is not about encapsulating the past and putting it beyond reach, but about using the past to teach and guide the future. Thus this is our primary goal: To develop our properties into educational facilities and experiences that will be a major attraction to all - from families with young children to scholars of American History - who visit our town. In many respects, that teaching and guiding needs to be directed to young people, to children who, while exposed to a myriad of computerized, preprogrammed forms of entertainment, have the same need that their parents and grandparents had to:
  • Connect with a tangible, non-electronic world.
  • Develop a sense of membership in their community.
  • Use lessons from the past to guide their future.

To promote our goals, we have designed a series of projects based upon our properties that present real, tangible opportunities to meet these objectives.
